Why does frost build-up lead to busting of pipe?

Water pipes burst because the water inside them expands as it converts into ice. This builds up pressure inside the pipe, which causes it to rupture. Sometimes when the pipes freeze, a bit of residual water is still left between the ice and faucet. The ice puts tremendous pressure on the water. This leads to bursting. That is why is always advised to open the tap and let the water drain away. This relieves the pressure.
